Souvenir of the Commemoration of the Centenary of the 1820 Settlers

"Souvenir in Commemoration of the Centenary of the 1820 Settlers of Albany" is an extremely interesting book about the arrival of the 1820 Settlers, their trials and tribulations and also the history and development of Grahamstown & East London.

Apart from the list of Settlers compiled by George Cory (complied from the original documents in the Cape Archives and London and Colonial lists) the book also contains quite a variety of contributions on the origins of the Settlers,  their stories, contributions by John Ayliffe etc.  A large number of photos and sketches are included as well. Another interesting inclusion is a section with of number of adverts of local companies in the 1920's.

The main sections of the books are as follows:

  • Introduction;
  • Grahamstown  - George Cory;
  • Notes on the Eastern Province in Pre-settler times - John Hewitt;
  • The coming of hte 1820 Settlers - George Cory;
  • John Mandy's story aboard the Nautilus, 1820;
  • East London's early history;
  • Scottish Emigrants - Thomas Pringle;
  • Alphabetical list of the British Settlers of 1820  (George Cory);
  • The Albany Settlement - John Ayliff;
  • Notes from the diary of Harry Hastings;
  • How Dick King saved Durban; and
  • 1820 Settlers and the freedom of the press.

The cd contains both an edited text-version of the book and an image-version - and naturally both are fully searchable.
